Preamble: The Organization The organization was conceptualized in the aftermath of a tragic domestic violence incident in rural Kisumu, Kenya, where a woman, Margaret Wanzuu (Time, May 10, 1999 - attached) lost her life at the hands of her husband. The Margaret Wanzu Foundation Organization (MWFO) was founded in 1997 and was officially registered in Kenya on September 1999 as non-profit, non-governmental, non-partisan organization. Due to sustainability issues, it stopped working actively in 2010. Later in 2013 was re-activated and officially re-registered as a Community Based Organization. MWFO is a founder member of Kenya MenEngage Alliance (KEMEA) and is currently chairs the Steering Committee that manages its resources and supervises member activities.
Working within a human rights framework, MWFO aims to promote and advocate for the rights of Girls and women to live free fair lives without fear of gender-based violence or discrimination. The Foundation is grassroots located and takes particular exception to focus on culturally induced and socially accepted types of violence
and discrimination such as, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), Early/Child Marriages, Forced Widow Inheritance and Domestic Violence (DV). These traditional practices are some of the root causes of GBV that relegate girls and women to second class citizens without basic human rights, adversely their health and wellbeing and impediments their personal and social development.
The Margaret Wanzuu Foundation envisions a society where people (i.e. women and men, boys and girls) live harmoniously together each respecting and nurturing one another’s freedom and well-being.
Margaret Wanzuu Foundation sees its purpose as that of helping individuals to re-discover their power within, in achieving peace within themselves and hence being at peace with others.
The foundation strategizes to put in place mechanisms that can help individuals, families and communities prevent domestic violence in their lives and to promote peaceful co-existence in the spirit of interdependency.
Community programs: the foundation works with three specific communities. Two of these (i.e. Nyakach and Kibwezi) are rural, while a third (Prisons) is mainly urban based. The major reason for singling out these communities is that this is where the late Margaret Wanzuu was born, married, lived and worked. It is therefore easy for people to identify with the course at hand, Specific activities in the community programs include:
- Research: an initial baseline survey has been carried out. Apart from establishing the prevalence of domestic violence in these communities, the survey also sought out the people’s perceptions on the causes and possible solutions to the scourge. Based on these results, projects have emerged which address the various needs highlighted.
- Training: the training project aims to equip a core group of individuals in the community with knowledge on domestic violence and some skills in communication and counseling.
- Peace gardens: this recognizes the need for communities to have a “safe” space for them to address their needs. It is our goal to finally have these centers emerge as healing and reconciliation havens that people in need could go to.
This mainly involves wide circulation of information on domestic violence packaged in various forms (e.g. pamphlets, books & booklets, talks, video & audio digital discs etc.)
During the 16days of activism against gender violence, Margaret Wanzuu organizes a walk entitled ‘From the Womb to the Tomb”. During this walk, attempts are made to literally and metaphorically walk through a woman’s life, right from birth to her death. Using the district offices as the intersection point, the walk passes the baton across a distance of 700km and transects the country from the East to the West,
Whenever appropriate, the Margaret Wanzuu joins hands with other organizations with similar objectives to impact on civil laws and cultural practices that directly or indirectly impact on people’s individual capacity to enjoy and express their freedom and wellbeing.
